Day Five - 82km
A good night in a bed is, i think, a good way to start a day. Although I do miss the uncomfortable loneliness you get from camping, being self-supported and being able to get on with everything you need to. I think I’ve found a few days camping followed by a bed is a good way.
Continued the IndiePac route in reverse by heading south toward Cooma. I reached out to a few WarmShowers host there but wasn’t successful, and the only camping spot I could find was about 20km before hitting Cooma, so not a long day in all. The road was dead straight with huge trucks blasting through, sweeping me along with them. Although it started cold, the sun was out all day before I arrived at my campsite, a large garden behind a pub, or as the Aussies call it a “Hotel”.
I dived into the pub after setting up my tent in the fading light and downed a few beers next to a fire. When the sun falls here, the temperature drops mega fast, and with it being winter, that’s usually around 4-5pm onwards. When I arrive at a campsite, its all about doing the important stuff first, with the last light, getting the tent up. After that, getting food setup and ready. The campsite was very basic but with running water nearby but the highway only 20 meters away. Came out from the pub to FREEZING temperatures, not helped but he fact I was sitting next to a fire the last few hours. Quite a bit of frost has started to set on my bike and the things I’ve left out, annoyingly

Death by backpack, but was it?
when I said I wasn’t prepared, carrying a backpack is another example why I never was. My back was killing after days carrying it, but I had to continue on, even knocking back painkillers. On reflection though, the big fall I had whilst rock climbing may have something to do with it.
The start of something cold?
After several hours sitting by an open fire, drinking beer, knowing my tent was calling me outside, did I really know how cold this night was going to be?
Thanks to Komoot for providing a sick app, which I only started using just as I was planning the ride down and since planned the whole adventure through it. At the time of writing this, I’ve since upgraded my phone from an iPhone 5s to iPhone 8, as the app would crash or wouldn’t track properly at certain points.
